Gardens and Chickens

Our order is in for seeds for the garden. Hopefully, we learned a few lessons from last year's critter invasion. In addition to the usual garden veggies, we're also gonna add some chickens in this year.

We have 10 Barred Rock chicks on order, as well as 15 Jumbo Cornish X Rocks to fill our freezer. Expecting delivery the last week of March from Murray McMurray Hatchery.

As soon as the weather warms up we're gonna try to put together a serviceable chicken coop and run from some of the scrap materials that we have laying around the garage and barn.

  1. What happened to the deer that ate your garden? Did you shoot them?

  2. I tried. They are smarter than me. Never had a safe shot (on our property). They tended to wait in the field across the street until dark, literally 5 feet behind our mailbox, then they would come over after dark and bed down in our walnut grove.

That and the neighbors dog chased them away during the day time.

I got really sick of them bedding down in the yard (as a herd of about 20) that one night I grabbed an armful of old apples and tried chasing them away while throwing golden delicious at them. They didn't seem to mind this too much, and they still ignored me. As soon as I ran out of apples and stopped running around screaming at them like a crazed idiot, they just went right back to laying where they had been. We'll try again this year. Maybe we can get a depredation permit in the summertime.

  3. This is such a great idea! Someday, when I'm in a different living situation, I'd love to try it, so I'll be keeping tabs on all of your tips. I take from this post that you'll be slaughtering your own chickens. True?
